Kitesurfing lessons on Mauritius

Lessons in one of the world's best lagoons, with waist-deep water. Beginner courses and advanced courses, available in summer and winter.
Certified IKO instructor Oleg Grebennikov
Spot conditions

A safe lagoon, waist-deep water, steady wind — everything you need to get up on the board in 4–5 days

Lessons take place at one of the best spots on Mauritius: a huge lagoon protected from ocean waves by a reef. The water is flat, the wind is steady, and the depth is waist-high. It's a place where you can calmly work through every exercise.
Waist-deep water across a wide area
You can stop and stand up at any moment. In conditions like these, it's not scary to make mistakes.
Steady wind
Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean with reliable wind statistics. The wind blows consistently in both summer and winter.
Flat water inside the lagoon
The reef shelters the lagoon from ocean waves. You learn on flat water, in ideal conditions for kiting.
About the instructor

Oleg Grebennikov — founder of Kitefun, IKO instructor

Hi, I'm Oleg — founder of the Kitefun kite school.

On Mauritius, I teach personally. I'm a certified IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) instructor — this is the international standard used in 60+ countries around the world.

What this means for you: a structured program, a clear progression from simple to complex, modern equipment, and radio communication with your instructor while you're on the water.

The most important thing for me is teaching safe riding. Kiteboarding is fun — a source of many happy moments — and I want it to stay that way for you, always.
For beginners

Complete course from scratch: from theory on the beach to confident riding on the board

The course is split into two stages. First — the basics of kite control on the beach and in the water. Second — the water start on the board and your first independent runs.
Level 1 — Foundation course (shore + water)
You'll learn the theory: how wind works, how the kite works, how to choose a riding spot. Then you move to practice: setting up and tuning your gear, launching the kite, and learning to control it. We also work through safety drills: the emergency release and self-landing.

✱ By the end of Level 1, you can control the kite with one hand while moving.
Level 2 — Water course (water start on the board)
You move into the water. You learn to relaunch the kite from the water and master body drag — being pulled along by the kite, including upwind. Then comes the water start: getting up on the board and making your first runs. You'll also learn right-of-way rules at the spot.

✱ By the end of Level 2, you ride independently on the board.
What you'll have at the end of the course:
An international IKO certificate. The skills to ride on your own. Solid knowledge of safety rules. And feelings you've never experienced before — but will want to experience again.

For experienced riders

For experienced riders — jumps, transitions, and riding upwind

A course for those who've already completed Level 1 and Level 2.
Level 3
What's covered: transitions while riding (without stopping), riding upwind, and jumps. With an instructor, progress on these moves is faster and safer — I see your mistakes from the outside and correct your technique by radio, right while you're on the water.

✱ The flat water of the lagoon is exactly what you need for practicing jumps.

Important: Level 3 does not include equipment rental.

Equipment

All equipment for lessons is included in the price

For Level 1 and 2 I'll provide the kite, board, harness, wetsuit, and radio. I use modern equipment, regularly updated. Equipment insurance is included — if something tears or breaks during a lesson, it's not on you.
What to bring with you:
Reef booties
Foot protection is essential. The lagoon floor on Mauritius has shells and coral.
Sunscreen
High SPF. The tropical sun is harsh, especially on the water.
Sunglasses
With a safety strap. I can recommend good models.

Safety

We teach in safe conditions

Waist-deep water, radio communication with your instructor, and emergency scenarios practiced in your very first lesson.
🛟
Safety — the first thing you learn
Right in your first lesson, you'll practice the emergency release (instantly disconnecting from the kite) and self-landing. That's the IKO standard: safety first, then riding.
🌊
The lagoon
You learn in shallow, waist-deep water. If anything goes wrong — you just stand up. The lagoon is protected from waves by the reef. You won't get swept out into the open ocean.
🪁
Equipment
Modern kites have built-in safety systems: one motion, and the kite loses all power and drops onto the water.
📡
Radio communication
Even when you're far from your instructor on the water, I can hear you and give instructions through the radio. You're never alone with the kite.
Where to stay

Which area of the island is best for accommodation

The spot is on the southwestern tip of the island. To avoid losing time on the road, we recommend three main areas:
La Gaulette — the choice of 90% of kiters
5–7 minutes to the spot by car. This is where the whole community is — the main supermarket, surf shops, and plenty of apartments for every budget.
Hotels on the Le Morne peninsula
5 minutes to the water (on foot or by hotel shuttle). A good fit if you want a "room-to-beach" rhythm with maximum comfort.
Tamarin / Black River
25–35 minutes to the spot. A larger area with city infrastructure, restaurants, and nightlife. Worth it if you're willing to spend an hour a day on the road for the extra comfort.
Other programs

In spring and autumn — kite safari around the islands of Hurghada, Egypt

Lessons on Mauritius run in winter and summer. The rest of the year, we run kite safaris around the islands of the Red Sea. A week on a 4-deck yacht, up to 10 hours of riding a day, shallow water, and a flat surface. Suitable for both beginners and experienced riders.
